The Michigan Hummer

I just returned from a getaway in beautiful Northern Michigan and feel downright inspired. For those of you who have never ventured to Northern Michigan, allow me to introduce you to the most delicious libation known to man—the Hummer.

Yes, the name incites snickers and a few (well-deserved) racy jokes, but I assure you, the drink itself is no laughing matter. Made with rum, coffee-flavored liqueur, and vanilla ice cream, the Hummer packs a buzz-inducing punch, but tastes like a milkshake. What’s not to love?

According to the Detroit Metrotimes, Jerome Adams, a bartender at Detroit’s Bayview Yacht Club, concocted the first Hummer in 1968. As Mr. Adams told the Metrotimes, one of the first patrons to try the drink provided the now famous name. “‘You know what?” he said, “After two of these damn things, kinda makes you wanna hum.” So it was dubbed the Hummer, and the rest is history.

For a knock-your-socks-off Hummer, try Chandler’s A Restaurant or The Depot Club & Restaurant. Or try Mr. Adams’ recipe for yourself. Blend 1½ ounces rum, 1½ ounces Kahlua, 2 scoops vanilla ice cream, and a few ice cubes, and enjoy!

On behalf of tipsy ice-cream lovers everywhere, Mr. Adams, I salute you.
