Kansas City’s Hippest Haunts

I was recently invited to write a Kansas City guide for Townske—a social medial publishing platform that allows you to create and share visual city guides to help people enjoy any city in the world.  Obviously, I said yes.  I’ve always said that Kansas City is a hidden gem—a big, beautiful “small town,” with a thriving arts community, GREAT restaurants, friendly people, and cheap drinks.  I love #KC, and I always will.  And happily (gratefully), I get to share Kansas City with the rest of the world.  Enjoy, my friends!

Click HERE for my full Townske guide.  See below for Kansas City’s Hippest Haunts: a local’s guide to drinking, dining, and making merry in Kansas City.

Julep
4141 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE #104, KANSAS CITY, MO 64111, UNITED STATES
Julep

Julep Cocktail Club promised to bring “class and kickass cocktails to Westport.” And they certainly did deliver! As the folks at Julep explain, “We’re guardians of fine whiskey, curators of elegant cocktails, administrators of delicious fare, and custodians of unequaled hospitality.” I couldn’t have put it better myself. If you want a world-class beverage, hightail it to Julep.

This beautiful bar boasts a stunning array of high-quality hooch. And their selection of bourbon and scotch is among the best in the city. But their specialty? Thoughtful, perfectly balanced, craft cocktails.

Bier Station
120 EAST GREGORY BOULEVARD, KANSAS CITY, MO 64114, UNITED STATESBier Station-Interior

Named one of Draft Magazine’s Top 100 American Beer Bars, this combination craft tasting bar and bottle shop is every beer-lover’s dream. Brown ales, sour beers, pilsners, porters—Bier Station has it all. Saddle up to the bar and try one of their 28 rotating on-tap selections and a Bavarian pretzel, or grab a mix-and-match six-pack to-go. Or head upstairs to their all-season biergarten. The retractable doors are open, the sun is shining, and the beer is flowing. Cheers!

Port Fonda
4141 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE, KANSAS CITY, MO 64111, UNITED STATES
Port Fonda

Port Fonda is one of my favorite spots in KC. With non-stop Mexican fare, delicious drinks, and a lively bar, it’s a great place for happy hour, dinner, or brunch (with a little morning-after hair-of-the-dog). But this Westport staple is more than just a good time. Yes, the atmosphere is great. The music, the location, that light-up sign. The food, however, is what makes it one of the best restaurants in town.

novel Restaurant
815 WEST 17 STREET, KANSAS CITY, MO 64108, UNITED STATES
Novel

Run, don’t walk to Novel—Ryan Brazeal’s innovative restaurant specializing in what he calls “novel American cuisine” located in Kansas City’s historic Westside. Novel’s exciting, delicious dishes and constantly evolving menu have garnered some well-deserved national attention (from heavy hitters like Bon Appetit and the New York Times, no less). Foodies flock to the petite Victorian cottage that houses Novel. With its rustic wood paneling and elbow-to-elbow seating, this “novel American” restaurant has a charming, almost minimalist feel. And the food. THE FOOD.

I asked our server about his favorite dishes on the menu. And per his (spot-on) suggestions, my dining companion and I sampled the Hamachi crudo, the duck neck dumpling, the diver scallops, and the Duroc pork chop. I can safely say, these were some of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten. And that’s not an exaggeration.

bluestem
900 WESTPORT ROAD, KANSAS CITY, MO 64111, UNITED STATES
Bluestem

bluestem Restaurant is one of the best in the country and my personal favorite. Owned by the 2013 James Beard Best Chef Midwest, Colby Garrelts, and his wife and fellow chef Megan Garrelts, this progressive spot provides seasonal, locally sourced, masterpiece meals. If you’re in the mood to “treat-yo-self,” try the five-course tasting menu. Or saddle up to the bar for a la carte options and an artisanal cocktail.

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts
1601 BROADWAY BOULEVARD, KANSAS CITY, MO 64108, UNITED STATES
Kauffman Center

The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is architecturally magnificent and the perfect place to enjoy live performances. From comedy, to chamber music, to breathtaking operas, shows at the Kauffman Center are always magical and, without question, always memorable.
