Kansas City Canning Co. “celebrates local and sustainable ways to preserve seasons, moments, and memories in food,” and produces some the best products in KC—delicious preserves, jams, and cocktail goods.
Husband and wife duo and Kansas City Canning Co. co-owners, Tim and Laura Tuohy, use time-honored, artisanal canning techniques passed down to them from loved ones. “It’s something that’s part of the fabric of who we are—and something we love to share with others,” Laura says.
They produce three year-round staples (Clementine Thyme Marmalade, 7-Pepper Jelly, and Pickled Balsamic Grapes), in addition to their rotating seasonal items (currently, Sriracha Pickled Green Beans and three flavors of shrubs—Blood Orange Ginger, Apple Caraway, and Spiced Pear).
And they’ve partnered with farms and farmers in our community who share their commitment to local food commerce and social responsibility—Boys Grow, New Roots for Refugees, and Uproot Market and Farm. As the folks at Kansas City Canning Co. explain, “Creating and sustaining relationships, dialog, and community through food is the absolute core of what we do.”
Try their products for yourself! I can’t get enough of their 7-Pepper Jelly, and their shrubs are the perfect cocktail mixers. My suggestion? Treat yourself to a Clementine Thyme Marmalade Smash! Combine 1.5 oz bourbon or rye, .5 oz sweet vermouth, 2T of Kansas City Canning Co. Clementine Thyme Marmalade, and a dash of bitters. Shake with ice and strain, and serve with a fresh sprig of thyme and a twist of citrus peel.
